Which crate for an Australian Shepherd? Size, type, and tips

The Australian Shepherd profile

The Australian Shepherd is a working breed: active, intelligent, and very attached to its owner. It generally weighs between 16 and 32 kg, depending on sex. This energetic breed needs long outings — and recovers intensely after exercise. Its bed should support that recovery.

What size bed for an Australian Shepherd?

An adult Australian Shepherd stretches out to between 60 and 80 cm when lying down. Recommended size:

  • Size L for females and lighter dogs (16-22 kg)
  • Size XL for males and heavier dogs (22-32 kg)

They often sleep sprawled out and like to stretch — don’t choose one that’s too small, or they’ll shun the bed.

What type of bed is best for an Australian Shepherd?

  • Rectangular bed with firm foam — Australian Shepherds often like to sleep sprawled out. They need space, not necessarily high sides.
  • Memory foam orthopedic bed — recommended from age 6-7. The hips and shoulders are major pressure points after years of intense activity.
  • Breathable material is essential — Australian Shepherds have a dense double coat. They get hot easily. Avoid synthetic materials that trap heat.

Australian Shepherds and separation anxiety

This is one of the breeds most prone to separation anxiety. An Australian Shepherd left alone without stimulation may develop destructive behaviors — including toward its bed.

If so, choose a basket with raised sides made from durable material. L’The cocoon effect reduces anxiety, and Oxford fabric is more resistant to claws.
