A behavior to take seriously
A dog that chews or swallows pieces of its cushion is not an isolated case. It’s a common behavior, but one that should never be ignored: beyond the cost of replacement, it poses a real risk to your dog’s health.
Main causes
- L’separation anxiety — the most common cause. The dog chews to manage stress when left alone.
- L’boredom — a dog that lacks physical and mental stimulation looks for things to do, even destructive ones.
- Teething — chewing relieves teething discomfort in puppies.
- Pica — a rare behavioral disorder that leads some dogs to eat non-food items.
- An appealing material — certain foams or synthetic fillings have a texture or smell that particularly attracts some dogs.
Health risks
Swallowing synthetic filling or foam can cause an intestinal obstruction — a serious veterinary emergency that sometimes requires surgery. Symptoms to watch for: repeated vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, and a taut abdomen. If in doubt, seek urgent veterinary care.
How to address it
- Identify the trigger — does the behavior only occur when you’re away? It’s anxiety. Does it also happen when you’re there? It’s more likely boredom or a behavioral disorder.
- Increase stimulation — more physical exercise and puzzle games (treat-dispensing toys, scent work)
- Provide chewable alternatives — durable chew toys to channel the urge
- Work on desensitization to being alone — gradually, if it’s separation anxiety
- Consult a veterinary behaviorist — if the behavior continues despite your efforts
Choosing a cushion your dog won’t be able to swallow
While you work on addressing the behavioral cause, choose a cushion designed to withstand chewing: reinforced Oxford fabric cover, double stitching, and compact, high-density foam (harder to tear out than fiber filling).
Our All-Season Orthopedic Bed uses scratch-resistant 600D Oxford fabric and dense foam that withstands this type of behavior better than traditional synthetic fiber cushions.
