How to Clean and Care for Your Dog's Bed: A Practical Guide

Why bed care is essential

A dog's bed is one of the places in the home with the most bacteria, dust mites, and allergens. A poorly maintained bed causes irritation, infections — and stubborn odors. The good news: a simple routine is all it takes.

How often should you wash the bed?

  • The cover — ideally once a week, at least twice a month
  • The inner foam — once a month, or whenever there’s a significant stain
  • Quick brushing — every 2-3 days to remove fur

How to wash the cover

  1. Remove fur with a lint roller before machine washing
  2. Wash at 30°C or 40°C according to the label
  3. Use detergent without a strong fragrance — dogs have very sensitive noses
  4. No fabric softener — it can irritate the skin
  5. Air-dry if possible

Cleaning the inner foam

Memory foam cannot be machine washed. Instead:

  1. Vacuum the entire surface
  2. Scrub stains with a damp sponge and Marseille soap
  3. Rinse with clean water without soaking
  4. Air-dry for 24 to 48 hours before putting the cover back on

Eliminate bad odors without chemicals

Baking soda — sprinkle it on the foam, leave for 30 min, then vacuum. Neutralizes odors without leaving residue.

Diluted white vinegar (50/50) — disinfects thoroughly. The smell disappears as it dries. L
